HIC SVNT DRACONES (HSD) comes from the 15th century cartographers’ term used to describe the interior of an unexplored, unmapped and undocumented continent. During the 19th century, this term disappeared from maps, since the coastlines and countries of the world had been fully explored, mapped, owned, fought over and reclaimed. HIC SVNT DRACONES is an entrance into a contemporary terra incognita of being human through exploring the edges of body, time, history and place, and emotional truths that are masked or unrevealed due to familial, social and cultural restraints.
HIC SVNT DRACONES has been in development since 2012 and was made possible, in part, through the Movement Research Artist-in-Residence Program, funded, in part, by the Davis/Dauray Family Fund and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and through additional residencies with Chashama (NYC), Studio Current (Seattle), Hanna Barn (Vashon WA), Harvard University Carpenter Center (MA), RWU (RI), and Dragon’s Egg (CT).
HSD has been performed as chapters in progress at Dixon Place, Center for Performance Research, Movement Research at the Judson Church, Triskelion Arts and Heliopolis Gallery, (NYC), Brooklyn Studio for Dance (NY), The Belfry (NY), Hollins University (VA), University Colorado Boulder, University Washington Bothell, Harvard University, Skidmore College as part of the BMCA conference (NY); Roger Williams University (RI), Bennington College, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Studio Current and Velocity Dance (Seattle), and Hana Barn Vashon WA.
